The secret ending lets V storm Arasaka Tower alone, without any allies. It's the hardest ending in the game — no backup, no second chances — but it has a unique payoff.
Requirements
You must reach 70% relationship with Johnny Silverhand before the Point of No Return. This is tracked through specific dialogue choices throughout the game.
Key Johnny Relationship Choices
These are the most important decisions that affect your relationship:
During 'Chippin' In' (Required Quest)
- Tell Johnny: "Let's do this for real." — NOT choosing this locks you out permanently.
- Give Johnny the cigarette.
- Tell him: "The Guy Who Saved My Life" when asked what he means to you.
This quest alone can push you from ~40% to 70% if done correctly.
Other Key Moments
- 'Tapeworm': Say you understand why he did what he did.
- 'Blistering Love': Complete Rogue's date fully.
- 'Holdin' On': Let Johnny speak at the memorial.
The Point of No Return
Before entering Misty's shop for the final sequence, you get a "Point of No Return" warning. This is your last chance to do side content.
How to Trigger the Secret Ending
- Wait at the rooftop with Johnny for the conversation.
- Do not skip or rush the dialogue — wait through the full conversation.
- After Johnny says all available lines, wait approximately 5 minutes of real time without touching anything.
- Johnny will start a new dialogue: "[Breathe]" — a new option appears.
- Choose this option. Johnny proposes going alone.
- Agree.
The Run
- You must infiltrate and clear Arasaka Tower solo.
- There are no checkpoints mid-mission.
- Recommended build: Sandevistan + high Reflexes, or stealthy Netrunner.
- If you die, you restart the entire mission.
Tips for Success
- Save before triggering the ending — you can reload and choose differently.
- Sandevistan (reaction-time implant) makes the combat manageable.
- Bring maxed grenades and armor.
- Netrunner builds can breeze through this with enemy hacks.
Outcome
This ending has a unique conclusion that differs from all other Arasaka endings. The final scene and epilogue are distinct. It's considered by many to be the most thematically resonant ending.
