How to Beat Malenia, Blade of Miquella
How to Beat Malenia, Blade of Miquella
Malenia is widely considered the hardest boss in Elden Ring — and possibly FromSoftware's entire catalog. She requires precise knowledge of her moveset, a good build, and patience.
Location
Malenia is found at the bottom of Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, which is accessed through the Consecrated Snowfield secret area. You'll need both halves of the Haligtree Medallion to reach the Grand Lift of Rold.
Phase 1 Overview
Malenia has two major mechanics to understand:
- Lifesteal: Every hit she lands heals her, even if you block it with a shield.
- Waterfowl Dance: Her signature combo — a series of forward lunges and slashes that can one-shot unprepared players.
Waterfowl Dance — The Key to Phase 1
This is the most important thing to learn. There are two approaches:
Option A: Run Away
- When you see her raise both arms and crouch slightly, immediately sprint away from her.
- The first flurry will miss. As she lands, sprint back toward her briefly.
- Sprint away again for the second flurry.
- After the second flurry ends, punish with 2–3 hits.
Option B: Roll Into It (Advanced)
- Wait until she begins the lunge.
- Roll toward and slightly left of her.
- After the first flurry, roll into the second.
- This is harder but positions you for a better punish.
Recommended Build
| Stat | Recommended Level |
|---|---|
| Vigor | 60+ |
| Endurance | 30 |
| Strength or Dex | 60 |
Weapon: Rivers of Blood (bleed) or Moonveil (INT builds) are effective. Sacred builds are neutral — she has no particular weakness.
Talisman: Shard of Alexander for maximum damage on skill use.
Flask split: 14 HP / 0 FP flasks recommended. This fight is purely physical.
Phase 2: The Rot Goddess
At 50% HP, Malenia sprouts wings and triggers a cutscene. The arena fills with scarlet rot flowers.
New attacks in Phase 2:
- Scarlet Aeonia: She leaps into the air and crashes down, leaving a rot field. Dodge when she's about to land.
- Clone dive: She creates floating copies that dive-bomb simultaneously. Roll through them — they pass through each other.
- Enhanced Waterfowl: Faster and now trails rot. Same strategy applies.
Key Tips
- Bloodhound's Step (if available) makes Waterfowl Dance trivial.
- Use Preserving Boluses proactively — Scarlet Rot builds fast in Phase 2.
- The Black Knife Tiche spirit ash is excellent here — she dodges reliably and deals decent damage without triggering Malenia's lifesteal often.
- Don't spam attacks. Her poise is very high; learn the safe punish windows (2–3 hits max).
- Patience wins this fight. Aggressive play causes deaths.
